[NI013] O.K. Gault mentions receiving a letter from his daughter Nittie. I dont
know if Nittie is a nickname or her birth name.

[NI014] Martin D. Kilham and L. C. Kilham are mentioned in a Cival War diary that
was kept by O. K. Gault. I suspect them to be O.K.'s mother and father in
law but I have not been able to confirm this. He talks about visting them
at 44 Woster St.

[NI015] O.K. Gault mentions his wife Aneida in a Cival war diary. I suspect her
parents to be Martin and L. C. Kilham but I can not confirm this.

I found a book "Chats with Girls on Self-Culture" and on the inside front
cover was an inscription " To Mabel M. Sterling and Estelle Eldredge from
Uncle L.C. Kilham Jan 1895". On the inside back cover was a Fiftieth
wedding Anniversary invitation for Olney K. Gault and Sara E. Kilham, 1839
to 1889. The reception is for December 26, 1889 from 8pm to 10pm at

[NI045] Found a hand written note which outlined the Budd's from Thomas Budd
(1615) through Joseph Lawyer Budd and his two children Carrie and Marie.
The letter has a note/arrow pointing to the children's names asking "Is
one of these the mother of Rev. Maxwell Budd Long?". In addition there is
no death date for Joseph Lawyer so I assume this letter could have been
written before his death in 1926. This note was found in belongings of
Maxwell's and it talks about him in third tense. The author of this note
is unknown but the address on the letter head is 212 High Street, Mount
Holly, New Jersey. His name was preceded by "Rev." and he lived in England.

From "Comly Family in America, Descendants of Henry and Joan Comly who came to America in 1682 ..." compiled by Geo. Norwood Comly, 1939 pages 767 - 776:

The Budd Family of Somersetshire, Eng., and Burlington Co., N.J.
"Rev. Thomas Budd, rector of All Saints, Martock, County of Somerset, England, was one of the early converts to Quakerism. An account of him is given in George Fox's Journal, edited by Norman Penny, Vol. 2 page 322, as follows:

'About 1655, Tho. Budd a priest in Somersetshire, came to bee convinct of ye everlasting gospell and forsooke all his parsonage and profitts and came to bee Improsioned for Truth: & proemunired becaused hee coulde not sweare. Whoe whilst hee was a preacher for money hee was highly estemed by ye bishopps; & ye Bishoppe when hee went his visitation progresse haveinge an esteeme for him: toled him hee might get his parishoners to geather & make merry with his parishoners & bringe them off these melanchly humors thewere in: soe when ye Bishoppe came yt away againe hee tolde him may it please your grace I have observed your orders butt when hee came to receive God's everlasting truth, hee forsooke all these vanityes & then hee was sorley Imprisoned & persecuted butt hee stooke faithfull in God's truth to his dying day.'

'He was formerly a Baptist Teacher.' (Ibid., p. 464.)

'6-22-1670, Thomas Budd, a faithful man, having been a prisoner at Ilchester about eight years under a sentence of premunire, departed this life in much peace of mind.' (Besse's "Sufferings," Vol. 1., p. 609)

From "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey" by Francis Bazley Lee Vol. 2, pages 433-435: ... father of the immigrant brothers, figures as the imediate ancestor of the Burlington, New Jersey, Budds. He was a rector of Martosh parish in Somersetshire and renounced his living there to become a member of the Society of Friends and a minister among them, In 1661 he was required to take an oath of obedience under the statutes prescribed by James I., "for the better discovering of papist recreants," but while he was willing to "affirm" he refussed to be sworn, and for this offense against dignity of the crown he was indicated, adjudged guilty, and languished out his few remaining years of life in prison; he died there still firm in the faith unto which he had declared himself."

Additional info on the letter:
"Joseph Budd, who married Sarah Downs, had a sister Catherine who married
William Euders. Their daughter Miss Euders visited us in Mt. Holly at one
time. She lived in Chicago."

"William came to America in 1678. He was a member of the New Jersey
Assembly in 1685 and was a Justice of the Peace in 1705."

Came to New Jersey in 1678 with his eldest brother Thomas and his order brothers John and James, and their families. He located and became possessed of large tracts of land in West Jersey, largely in Burlington Co., where he always lived. He and his brother Thomas were the original locators and proprietors of all the land included in the township of Pemberton and east and west thereof for two or three miles, and from them most titles were divised. Their lands extended from the ridge of hills known as Juliustown and Arney's mount, several miles wide in a southerly direction to the north branch of Rancocas creek. Although one of the original proprietors of a considerable tract of land in West Jersey, William Budd appears less conspicuously in the early history of the region than his brother Thomas by reason of the fact that he took small part in the political affairs of the colony, preffering the more quiet and to him more congenial pursuit of farming. Besides this he differed with his brothers in religious views, and if he ever in part accepted the faith of his father and other members of the family he must have remounced it in favor of that of the Protestant Episcopal church.

He was perhaps the most prolific of any of the budds of Burlington County, having nine children, and it is said that more than one half of all the pesons buried in the old Methodist graveyard at Pemberton are his descendants.

In the pocket of the coat I wear everyday, is a little old baby shoe that
has a history and is a curiosity. This shoe is one of the first shoes my
baby Carrie wore. When I left our camp at Hamilton in Sept 1861, with my
company and regiment my wife pulled off Carries shoe and stocking and sent
them to me. I thrust them into the right hand pocket of my uniform blouse
and carried the shoe there all of the time I was in the Army. The little
stocking was lost, but the mate of it is in max's album. This shoe was in
all of the camps, marches, skirrmishes, battles and seiges that I was in
during my three years service in the famous "Army of the Cumberland". It
was in the battle of shiloh, Chicamauga, went up the hights of Missionary
Ridge in the memorable charge, was in the hundred days seige of Atlanta
and was in my pocket when I was mxxxxxxd out of the service.

After resuming civil life, I put the shoe in my "civil" coat and every
time I changed coats, I changed the shoe and have done this and carried
that shoe on my person ever since Sept. 1861 which at this writing is
~B~UTwenty Seven Years~b~u. It has been constantly my "Talisman". I am not
superticious, but I would not part with that shoe for any sum of money. It
is quite famous in commercial circles in New York, Philadelphia and
Boston. I have often been asked to display it and it has been gazed at
with currosity. I want it on my person as long a I live, and after I am
gone I want Max to have it and keep it as long as he lives. There is not
another shoe in the world with such a history.

From "History of Monmouth Co. New Jersey" by Franklin Ellis page 53:
In 1675, when the Indian King, Philip, was waging war of extermination against the New England settlements, the news of those bloody atrocities coming to New Jersey created a general feeling of alram and fear of an Indian uprising... At about this time Thomas Budd came to settle at Burlington, where the Indian alarm was then great. Budd and some others held a conference with the Indians to ascertain what grounds of complaint they had, if any, and the result of the "talk" is given in a pamphlet afterwards published by him.

"STOCKTON ... Finally, Richard Stockton the founder of the family at present under consideration, is found in Charleston, Massachusetts, as early as 1639, where he is witness to a deed. The next reference to him is among the original patentees names in the charter of the town of Flushing, Long Island, where he appears to have ben a prominet man, being rated among the rather well-to-do citizens of the place, taking a prominent part in the controversies between the town and Gov. Peter Stuyvesant on religious matters, holding the lieutenancy of the House of Guards of Flushing, and declining with the consent of Governor Niccolls an election to the same position in the Foot Guards. Between 1670 and 1680 he became converted to the tenents of the Society of Friends, and, selling his Long Island property, he removed to Springfield township, Burlington County, New Jersey, where he purchased twelve hundred acres of land from George Hutchinson, where he lived until his death, between Januar 25, 1705-6 and October 10, 1707, the dates of the executing and the filing of his will...Children, all probably born in New England of Long Island.

[NI194] Abigail survived her husband Richard, being alive on April 14, 1714, and who, there is some reason to surpose, may have been his second wife.

[NI195] His father took him to Springfield township, Burlington county, New Jersey, where he remained until after his marriage, when he removed to Piscataway. Later he bought the famous fifty-five hundren acres on which the town and university of Princeton now stand, making his residence on a part of it.

[NI213] CHRISTENING: 3 DEC 1708, Rahway,Union,St. Mary's,N.J.

[NI214] Discovered Benjamin's grave in Lebanon cemetary. Unsure at this time of his relationship but I'm assuming he may be the son of Benjamin D. Boylan.

[NI233] Information was taken from: "The Genealogy of the Worthington Family of
Alabama, South Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio by Henry Upson Sims [1937]".
Being descendants of Robert Worthington, who emigrated from England to
Ireland and New Jersey in 1713, with and Appendix on the Symcock family of
Pennsylvania down to 1716.

[NF46] Married in the Church of the Redeemer, founded by Jim's Grandfather
Maxwell Budd Long on Oct 25th, 1908.
