• Biography
Henry Warner (1754-1815) was my 4x great grandfather (Jim Kamphaus). He was born
in Frederick Co., Maryland colony, to Nicolas and Anna Maria Warner.
Nicolas was the Immigrant having arrived probably from Wuerttemburg,
Germany in ca. 1754. In ca. 1774 Henry married Susanna Bostetter
(1754-1820), daughter of Andrew Bostetter and Elizabeth Long.
By 1775 he was in old Bedford Co., PA, east of Altoona, and during
the Revolutionary War he was in the Pennsylvania militia. Ten children
were born to Henry and Susanna, the first six being married in Bedford
Co.
- Jacob (1775-1835) who married Rosanna Lingenfelter,
- John (1777-1859) who married Catherine Nicodemus,
- Elizabeth (1779-1815) who married William Snider,
- Henry, Jr. (1781-1860) who married Elizabeth Nicodemus,
Catherine's sister,
- Andrew (1784-1823) who married Catherine Brumbaugh,
- David (1787-1862) who married Esther Brumbaugh, Catherine's
sister,
- Susannah (1791-1825) who married Samuel Folkerth,
- Daniel (1792-1826) who married Sarah Eller,
- Samuel (b. 1795, d. bef. 1810),
- Catherine (1797-1865) who married John Mast.
Henry amassed a number of farms in the Bedford and Huntingdon Co. areas, but apparently wanted his children and their families to live more closely together. Therefore, in 1811 when he was 57 years old, he sold
all of this land and together with his nine surviving children and their
families took the road west to the Ohio River where they boarded
flatboats for Cincinnati and then came overland by wagon to Randolph
Twp.
Prior to the trip he had one of his sons go ahead to buy land.
Divided among the various families it comprised a strip almost three
miles long extending west from what is now Rt. 48 (old Covington Pike)
and lying on the north side of Sweet Potato Ridge Rd. It became known
as the "Warner Settlement."
After settling in, it was time to help start a new church. The Warners were founders of present-day Salem Church of the Brethren in 1817, at the corner of Diamond Mill and Phillipsburg-Union Rds. One son became an elder while another was a deacon of that church. Henry back in Bedford Co., was Brethren and probably attended Clovercreek Brethren Church east of Martinsburg that dates from before 1790. Certainly, his children were of that faith, and they married families that were Brethren as well. Two of the children moved on from there. John moved to Koskiusko Co., IN, after his wife's death. Henry, Jr. in his later years moved to near Bradford.
Henry died in 1815, and along with some of his children and their
spouses, he is buried in the Old Warner Cemetery (aka Herr Cemetery) on Sweet Potato Ridge Rd. about one mile west of Rt. 48. This little burial site was ravaged by time and vandalism, and Henry's tombstone has
been lost. However, several years ago, local members of the Warner
family, refurbished the remaining stones and placed a granite memorial
to Henry and his family.

1977 Letter from Gale E. S. Honeyman, 360 Mt. Washington Drive, Los Angles California 90065:
The new Helper has just arrived and noted with interest your query on Susannah Bostetter / Nickodemus Warner. I've enclosed a form of her children, rather Henry's, if indeed he was twice married. I've honestly never found any evidence that there were two wives.
Several years ago, I corresponded with Virginia Westhaeffer, who is currently president of the Nat'l. Gene. Society and a Nicodemus descendant. She has done considerable research on this line and found the Bible of Conrad and Margaretha (Hartle) Nicodemus giving the births of Catharina 20 Dec 1777 and Elizabetha 28 Jan 1781 and a deed, with release of heirs of Conrad, dying possessed of property at Martinsburg, PA., date 12 Aug 1826, Catharine Nicodemus, intermarried with John Warner and Elizabeth Nicodemus intermarried with Henry Warner, both of Randolph Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio. Until this evidence was found, it was thought that John's wife was a Baker and Henry II's was a Folkner. both are listed such in the Pumphrey notebook mentioned on the form, both without any proof of the Maiden names. It seems to me that the two elder Henry's were confused and that the elder one was listed with this wife when it should have been the second one. It took me some time to track down Henry II's resident, found it to be Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. Tombstones for he and his wife are located at the Old Harris Creek Cemetery, a Dunker Cem. in Adams Twp., Darke Co., O. and corresponds with know birth dates. Virginia, in her Nicodemus search has not turned up a possible lady of Henry I's age for such a marriage. She found a marriage in Washington Co., Maryland for Henry Werner and Susanna Pragunier, 28 May 1779 by Rev. Jacob Weimer and a 1776 Census of Frederick Co., MD. listing the Progenier Family. They lived in Elizabeth Hundred, which later in 1776 became part of Washington. Co. Peter, age 40, Margret 42, Margretha 17, Susanna 15, Elizabeth 13, Peter 11, David 9, Barbara 6, Henry 4, Jacob 4. This presents a possibly, but further evidence would have to be located. It also would be reasonable to assume the names Peter and Margaret to be in our family line, which was customary and are not, so this maybe a wild goose chase. I personally feel that it will take a will or deed of heirs to prove who Susannah really was, which is not in existence or has been overlooked all these years.
My interest is very vested in this family as I decent from 3 sons, Jacob, Henry II and David, I've amassed great amounts of data of the family and am most interest to know where you fit into the pictures. My hopes are to eventually publish a volume of the Warners, correcting old mistakes and adding new material.
Will be looking forward to hearing from you. I am most willing to exchange data. Sincerely (Mr.) Gale E. S. Honeyman

Major Joseph L. Budd
MAJOR JOS. L. BUDD DIES IN CINCINNATI
Was A Successful Merchant of Lebanon A Great Many Years
End Came Last Sunday at the Home of His Granddaughter
Buried Here
Ripe in years, four score and eight, rich in good deeds and beloved by all who knew him, the earthly life of Major Joseph L. Budd tapered down to death at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Jos. A. Schats, Hyde Park, Cincinnati, last Sunday. His mortal remains were brought here and buried in the Lebanon Cemetery on Tuesday.
The deceased was in his 88th year, having been born at Mt. Holly, N. J., June 24, 1834. He resided in Ohio the greater portion of his life and for many years was a successful merchant here in Lebanon. His home while here was the present residence of Judge Hamilton. Later he resided in Hamilton, Ohio, and at Cincinnati.
Early in the Civil War he enlisted as a soldier in the Union army and he was the first captain of Company A, 35th, O. V. I., in which were many Warren county boys. In a short time he was promoted to major of his regiment, in which capacity he served until the regiment was mustered out.
He was married in Lebanon to Miss Catherine Boylan, who survives him.
He was made a Master Mason in Lebanon on February 25, 1854, and he was probably the oldest member of the Lebanon lodge.
He was an active and earnest member of the Episcopal church and when a resident of Lebanon, took a deep interest in the G__ ___ which he assisted in founding. His death is deeply regretted by a large circle of Warren county friends.
