Thomas Budd, the eldest of the four sons, was born in 1646. He came to Burlington, N.J. in 1688, went back to England, but returned in the "Kent" in 1678 with his family and three brothers, settling at Burlington. ...
Then in 1690 he removed to Philadelphia and carried on his business as merchant until his death in 1697. He was author of "Good Order Established in Pennsylvania and New Jersey in America," 1683; also of a proposal to create vocational education in the public schools and the appropriation of public funds for educational purposes.

General Notes: Husband - Thomas BUDD
Rev. Thomas Budd, born 1615, matriculated at Merton College, Oxford, B.A. 1633, M.A.1636. Was an established preacher of teh National Church of England, and vicar of Montacute, 1639. He was among the first to embrace the teachings of George Fox the Quaker and separated himself from the established church; renounced his benefice and became a minister of the gospel without money. He was persecuted, arrested, found guilty and confined in Ilchester jail, where hedied June 22, 16
Reverend Thomas Budd was born in England, on 23 May 1617. I have seen two different spouse names for him, but I do not know if he was really married twice, if one of the records was mistaken, or which order the spouses came in if he was married twice. Their names were Suzanna Prigge and Johanna Knight, the daughter of Giles Knight.
He served as the Rector of the parish at Somersetshire, England, and joined the Quakers in 1657. In 1661, he refused to take the oath of obedience to the Church of England; he was arrested and jailed. Thomas spent nine years in Ilchester jail, until his death in 1670.
A Quaker meeting of 7 or 800 people at his orchard was once broken into by five ministers from nearby parishes, leading a mob armed with heavy implements:
Three weeks later he was arrested at a meeting. "We had our clothes torn, some spat upon our heads, others threw cow dung, sticks, dabs of earth at us, and afterwards our Friends that spoke were haled and pulled down from their places. Therefore, as you are set to do justice upon offenders, so I desire that you will make inquiry after such of them as were guilty of that tumult, and let the innocent enjoy their freedom"

While Mary's first husband was a doctor by profession, Francis Collins was a bricklayer. He was from Gloucester, although I do not know if by this it was meant Gloucester, NJ or England; he was the one who rebuilt the Burlington County Courthouse.
2. Thomas Budd, born 19 May 1645, died 5 Feb 1687/8 in Philadelphia. He was married to Suzanna Robinson. It is possible that he arrived in New Jersey around 1668; ten years later he returned aboard the Kent, with his family and three of his brothers--there were 25 passengers in all on the boat. He was elected by the West Jersey Assembly in 1681 as one of eight commisioners for the settling and regulation of lands, along with Thomas Olive, Robert Stacy, Mahlon Stacy, Benjamin Scott, Thomas Gardine, Daniel Wells, and Thomas Lambert. Thomas Budd was a friend of George Fox and William Penn, and wrote a pamphlet entitled "Good Order Established in New Jersey". George Fox did not approve of his book, it was said.
In 1684, he was sent, along with Samuel Jennings, to England to negotiate a disagreement with the authorities about the appointment of a New Jersey governor.
When George Keith split from George Fox and formed the Separatist Quakers, Thomas was one of his first and most loyal supporters. In 1690, he purchased a tavern, the Blue Anchor, in Philadelphia, which, according to a dubious legend, was the first building built in Philadelphia, in 1682. He moved it and added ten 2-story houses on Front Street, known for a period as "Budd's Long Row".
Thomas Budd was married to Suzanna Robinson; she died in 1707 and was buried in Philadelphia on Feb. 4 of that year, a week shy of ten years to the day that her husband died in that same city. Before they passed on, Thomas and Suzanna had a number of children:

"At about this time Thomas Budd came to settle at Burlington, where the Indian alarm was then great. Budd and some others held a conference with the Indians to ascertain what grounds of complaint they had, if any, and the result of the "talk" is given (in a pamphlet published by him )...
3. John Budd, born 22 Feb 1647 in England. He died Nov 1704; his wife was Rebecca Sandiland. He settled at Burlington, New Jersey in 1675 and later moved to Philadelphia. He was a merchant by occupation; his wife's brother was the Sheriff of Philadelphia from 1706-1707, a Mr. James Sandliand. John and Rebecca had four children together:

4. James Budd, born 2 January 1648; he drowned at Burlington, New Jersey in 1692. He was married to Joanna Reeves, in 1659. He was elected to the West Jersey Assembly, like his brother Thomas, in 1685. That same year he also served as a Justice of the Peace. Before his untimely demise, James fathered two children:

5. William Budd, born 13 May 1649, died 25 March 1721. He was married to a woman named Anne, whose surname I have seen spelled as Clapgut, Claypoole, and everything in between. William was appointed Justice of the Peace in June of 1705, a post held by his older brother, Thomas, 20 years earlier. In his will, he listed as "personal property" a boy named William Alcott, of whom I know nothing. He left 100 acres to the Episcopal Church of England to build a church, and also left land to the church in Burlington. Apparently he did not share his father's Quaker beliefs. William was by far the most prolific of the Budd family that came together to settle Burlington in the late 17th century. He and Anne had ten children together:
