Thomas Budd, the eldest of the four sons, was born in 1646. He came to Burlington, N.J. in 1688, went back to England, but returned in the "Kent" in 1678 with his family and three brothers, settling at Burlington. ...
Then in 1690 he removed to Philadelphia and carried on his business as merchant until his death in 1697. He was author of "Good Order Established in Pennsylvania and New Jersey in America," 1683; also of a proposal to create vocational education in the public schools and the appropriation of public funds for educational purposes.

Rev. Thomas Budd, born 1615, matriculated at Merton College, Oxford, B.A. 1633, M.A.1636. Was an established preacher of teh National Church of England, and vicar of Montacute, 1639. He was among the first to embrace the teachings of George Fox the Quaker and separated himself from the established church; renounced his benefice and became a minister of the gospel without money. He was persecuted, arrested, found guilty and confined in Ilchester jail, where hedied June 22, 16
Reverend Thomas Budd was born in England, on 23 May 1617. I have seen two different spouse names for him, but I do not know if he was really married twice, if one of the records was mistaken, or which order the spouses came in if he was married twice. Their names were Suzanna Prigge and Johanna Knight, the daughter of Giles Knight.
He served as the Rector of the parish at Somersetshire, England, and joined the Quakers in 1657. In 1661, he refused to take the oath of obedience to the Church of England; he was arrested and jailed. Thomas spent nine years in Ilchester jail, until his death in 1670.
A Quaker meeting of 7 or 800 people at his orchard was once broken into by five ministers from nearby parishes, leading a mob armed with heavy implements:
Three weeks later he was arrested at a meeting. "We had our clothes torn, some spat upon our heads, others threw cow dung, sticks, dabs of earth at us, and afterwards our Friends that spoke were haled and pulled down from their places. Therefore, as you are set to do justice upon offenders, so I desire that you will make inquiry after such of them as were guilty of that tumult, and let the innocent enjoy their freedom"
(The above was quoted from Braithwaite, William Charles, "The Beginnings of Quakerism", Cambridge University Press, 1955, p. 386-7; and also appears in Besse, "Sufferings: A Collection of the Sufferings of the People Called Quakers" 1650-1689, published originally in London, 1753.)
Reverend Thomas Budd had six children. Their names were:
1. Mary Budd, born about 1634; she married first Dr. John Gosling (in 1682), and secondly Francis Collins (in 1686) From the first marriage it appears there was one son, John Gosling; the second marriage produced several offspring:.
..................Joseph Collins
..................Sarah Collins, who married a Mr. Dimsdal
..................Mary Collins, who married a Mr. Kimball
..................Samuel Collins, who married Abigail Ward
..................Margaret Collins, who married a Mr. Hogg
..................Elizabeth Collins, who married a Mr. Southwick
..................Rebecca Collins, who married a Mr. Briant and had:
....................................Thomas Briant
..................John Collins
..................Francis Collins
While Mary's first husband was a doctor by profession, Francis Collins was a bricklayer. He was from Gloucester, although I do not know if by this it was meant Gloucester, NJ or England; he was the one who rebuilt the Burlington County Courthouse.
2. Thomas Budd, born 19 May 1645, died 5 Feb 1687/8 in Philadelphia. He was married to Suzanna Robinson. It is possible that he arrived in New Jersey around 1668; ten years later he returned aboard the Kent, with his family and three of his brothers--there were 25 passengers in all on the boat. He was elected by the West Jersey Assembly in 1681 as one of eight commisioners for the settling and regulation of lands, along with Thomas Olive, Robert Stacy, Mahlon Stacy, Benjamin Scott, Thomas Gardine, Daniel Wells, and Thomas Lambert. Thomas Budd was a friend of George Fox and William Penn, and wrote a pamphlet entitled "Good Order Established in New Jersey". George Fox did not approve of his book, it was said.
In 1684, he was sent, along with Samuel Jennings, to England to negotiate a disagreement with the authorities about the appointment of a New Jersey governor.
When George Keith split from George Fox and formed the Separatist Quakers, Thomas was one of his first and most loyal supporters. In 1690, he purchased a tavern, the Blue Anchor, in Philadelphia, which, according to a dubious legend, was the first building built in Philadelphia, in 1682. He moved it and added ten 2-story houses on Front Street, known for a period as "Budd's Long Row".
Thomas Budd was married to Suzanna Robinson; she died in 1707 and was buried in Philadelphia on Feb. 4 of that year, a week shy of ten years to the day that her husband died in that same city. Before they passed on, Thomas and Suzanna had a number of children:
.................John Budd, who married first Sarah Cozens, and secondly, Rebecca Boynton. In many New Jersey history books he is referred to as "John of Whippany", as that is the town where he settled. The children of John Budd (although the mother of each is not certain) were:
.....................................Dr. Bernardes Budd, who married Phebe Wheeler.
.....................................Dr. John Budd. He studied medicine in Salem County with his brother, Thomas; they both joined the state medical society in May of 1767. In 1771 he moved to Charleston, South Carolina. John was married to a woman by name of Rosanna Shivers.
.....................................Catherine Budd, who married a Mr. Gilcrist
.....................................Susan Budd, who married a Mr. Stewart
.....................................William Budd, who returned to England to live.
.....................................Mary Budd, who married Peter Boynton.
.....................................Dr. Thomas Budd; he lived in Hanover Township, Morris County in 1767, the year he joined the State Medical Society. In March of 1738 he was lost at sea aboard the Randolph .................Mary Budd, born in 1679 and married to William Allen
................. Rose Budd, born 13 Jan 1681. On 4 May 1721, she married Charles Plumley in 1721. They had one child:.
...................................Sarah Plumley, who married Judge Edward Shippen of Philadelphia.
.................Ruth Budd, born 13 Jan 1686/7.
.................Thomas Budd, who married a woman named Martha. He died in 1699, after he fathered two children:.
.....................................Mary Budd
......................................George Budd
(information regarding Thomas Budd was obtained from abstracts of New Jersey Wills, from State of New Jersey by F.B. Lee, "Barking Up Family Trees" magazine 9 Oct 1965, Monmouth County History by Franklin Ellis, and from private genealogies on file with the Ocean County Historic Society)
The following information is quoted directly from "Monmouth County History":
"At about this time Thomas Budd came to settle at Burlington, where the Indian alarm was then great. Budd and some others held a conference with the Indians to ascertain what grounds of complaint they had, if any, and the result of the "talk" is given (in a pamphlet published by him )...
3. John Budd, born 22 Feb 1647 in England. He died Nov 1704; his wife was Rebecca Sandiland. He settled at Burlington, New Jersey in 1675 and later moved to Philadelphia. He was a merchant by occupation; his wife's brother was the Sheriff of Philadelphia from 1706-1707, a Mr. James Sandliand. John and Rebecca had four children together:
................John Budd
................George Budd; he moved to Annapolis, Maryland about 1724.
...............George Budd; perhaps one of them died at a young age, but without dates of birth it is hard to say
...............Samuel Budd
(information regarding John Budd was found in New Jersey Biographical and Genealogical Notes", as well as "Barking Up Family Trees" magazine from 9 October 1965, and from private genealogies on file at a local historic society).
4. James Budd, born 2 January 1648; he drowned at Burlington, New Jersey in 1692. He was married to Joanna Reeves, in 1659. He was elected to the West Jersey Assembly, like his brother Thomas, in 1685. That same year he also served as a Justice of the Peace. Before his untimely demise, James fathered two children:
..............William Budd
..............James Budd, who was in turn the father of:
..............................Samuel Budd
5. William Budd, born 13 May 1649, died 25 March 1721. He was married to a woman named Anne, whose surname I have seen spelled as Clapgut, Claypoole, and everything in between. William was appointed Justice of the Peace in June of 1705, a post held by his older brother, Thomas, 20 years earlier. In his will, he listed as "personal property" a boy named William Alcott, of whom I know nothing. He left 100 acres to the Episcopal Church of England to build a church, and also left land to the church in Burlington. Apparently he did not share his father's Quaker beliefs. William was by far the most prolific of the Budd family that came together to settle Burlington in the late 17th century. He and Anne had ten children together:
.............Mary Budd , born in 1680. She married Joseph Shinn (1701-1759). Their children were:
...............................Francis Shinn, who married Martha Shinn (daughter of George Shinn and Martha Branson-Owen)
...............................Abigail Shinn, married to Joseph Budd in 1778
...............................John Shinnmarried to Mary Allen in 1763
...............................Benjamin Shinn(1733-1791); he married Ann Reese (1737-1809) in 1759.
...............................Joseph Shinn
...............................Vestai Shinn
...............................William Shinn, married to Sarah French in 1756
...............................Rebecca Shinn, who married George Clapp in 1761
...............................Patience Shinn
(see History of the Shinn Family in Europe and America, and New Jersey Genealogical and Biographic Notes.)
.............William Budd , who married Elizabeth Stockton
..............Joseph Budd born in 1682 , who married Hannah Wilson; they were the parents of:
..............................John Budd, who married Mary Shreve
..............Thomas Budd (1710-1751). He married Rebecca Adkinson, daughter of Samuel Adkinson and Ruth Stacy-Beakes. Their children were:
................................Rachel Budd, who married Isaac Collins in 1778. She died in 1805.
................................Joseph Budd, who married Rebecca, the daughter of Robert Worrell
................................Ruth Budd, who died as an infant
................................Elizabeth Budd, who married Moses Barton in 1764
................................Dr. Stacy Budd, who married Sarah Munro, daughter of John. He died in 1804. They were the parents of :
* Sarah Budd, who married George Samuel J. Read
* Margaret Budd, who married John Bispham
* Dr. Benjamin Say Budd
..............Suzanna Budd, born in 1691. She married Samuel Woolston. (Samuel later married another woman and fathered Samuel Woolston, jr. in 1719; thus Suzanna was probably already dead at that point, a very young age to die.)
.............Ann Budd , born in 1694 and married to James Bingham and had:
................................William Bingham, who married Mary Stamper.
.............James Budd, who married Sarah Tyndal and had:
................................James Budd, who married Mary Collins and was in turn the father of Ann Budd, who married William Yardley
.............Thomas Budd, born 1686 in Burlington, NJ. He was twice married, first to Deborah Longstaff, and secondly to a Margaret. He died in Burlington in 1714. He was the father of:
................................John Budd, who married Mary Beckitt and secondly to Rosamond Gaskill or Goslin?. Click on his first wife's name for more info on both.
.............David Budd; while unsure of his birth date, he was christened in July of 1714.
.............Levi Budd (1726-1790) was also married twice; first to Elizabeth Coates, and secondly to another Elizabeth whose surname is not known.
6. Suzanna Budd, born about 1655. She was married to a Mr. Slade, in April of 1676.
